Lucky for Winkler then that he can rely on flashbacks to convey what's going on behind Jamal's lifeless visage. All mumbly and vacant, his character's scenes seem largely truncated when compared to the other three leads, giving one the impression that much of his performance must have been deemed unusable by the filmmakers. Though those two are a big part of the problem.ĥ0 Cent's performance as the emotionally haunted and physically damaged soldier Jamal is a lesson in what not to do as an actor. Winkler (who won an Oscar for producing Rocky all those years ago) and his scripter Mark Friedman (his first time at bat) then bring our troops home, where their individual stories unfold with about as much style and verisimilitude as a Lifetime TV movie, albeit one with Sam Jackson and 50 Cent in it. Jackson is traumatized by all the blood and death he's seen, Biel loses her hand in an explosion, 50 Cent accidentally kills a civilian, and Presley sees his best friend (played by One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray) shot and killed. The team has just gotten word that they are due to ship back home soon, but during a humanitarian mission their convoy is ambushed (in a fairly unrealistic scene that does not seem to reflect the real-world Iraq) and the four are variously damaged and affected as a result. Jackson's field surgeon, Jessica Biel's maintenance clerk, and 50 Cent (using his "actor's name" Curtis Jackson) and Brian Presley as two infantrymen. The film starts off in Iraq (or at least Morocco passing for) where we meet our four protagonists: Samuel L.
